Freddie is currently rather fond of yoghurt with frozen berries. I discovered he preferred them frozen when he ate them on the way back from our freezer under the house and wouldn’t wait for the berries to defrost. He gobbles down frozen berries and yoghurt calling it ‘icey yoghurt’ and thinks it is a quite delicious treat that tastes like ice-cream! The real bonus is that not only is this dessert sugar free but the berries are packed full of vitamin C which helps enhance iron absorption.
Now the weather is getting warmer ice blocks or ice lollies as they’re called in the UK are refreshingly tempting. The only problem is that they are packed with sugar and often full of artificial colours and flavours.
Home-made ice blocks
So inspired by Freddie’s new love of frozen berries I thought I’d make my own. These yoghurt versions really do only take 5 minutes to prepare, then pop them in the freezer for at least 6 hours and there you have it, a tasty calcium on a stick, fruit filled treat your whole family will love.
- 250g natural yoghurt
- 2 small bananas
- 150g frozen berries (blueberries are good as they don’t have large seeds)
- Place all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl and blend until smooth.
- Split the ingredients between 6 ice block moulds.
I found some great ice block moulds in the supermarket for about $5 so not only is this recipe healthy it is also a money saver! The sun doesn’t even need to be shining to enjoy them. In fact there is nothing better than eating ice-cream inside on a rainy day which is exactly what we did on Sunday as a family.
