Looking to introduce early maths ideas to your young child?
As an early childhood teacher, I've heard many parents asking "How can i teach my child the basics?" (eg maths, science, english, literacy).
Throughout our day in daycare, we offer a large variety of play experiences which help develop these early skills.
One of our most popular (and cheap) ways of teaching maths concepts to our children is this fun coloured sorting game. I purchased cheap coloured popsicle sticks, cubes and pegs from our local dollar store. And from that same store found small wooden bowls that i painted with a circle of matching colours to the sorting items. This was all done for under $6.
Children request these out every day as they enjoy sorting the colours into the matching bowls.
We find this a very popular, easy, cheap experience that you can do easily at home with your child. They are learning about classifying, sorting and counting. As well as exploring colour knowledge.
It's a fun way to explore early maths concepts and start developing those skills that will be laterrequired in school. Enjoy!
